Re: Montgomeryshire Enquiries Generally
I anticipated being absent for longer but I am back on course again.
Re: Aberhafesp, Montgomeryshire
Dear Mary Paton
Aberhafesp is a parish a few miles west of Newtown. It means the mouth of
the Hafesp or the Summer-dry (brook). Cefn Brith means mottled ridge.
There are places of this name in Carno and Llanmerewig but not one in
Aberhafesp. In Llanmerewig, it is a house not far from the (Old) Rectory
and, I think it will be, more or less, in Abermule.
Re: William and Mary BRADLEY
Dear Ann Lonsdale
I regret that I do not have marriage records for Meifod post 1837. The
surname is most frequently encountered as BRADLEY though at William's
baptism in 1816, the incumbent wrote BRADELY as he did for the other
children of the parents, John and Ann. In Meifod parish registers, there
were six christenings of a Mary in 1814/1815 - 1814 Richards (tailor); 1815
Bebb/Thomas (illeg.) (servant), Parry (farmer), Edwards (shoemaker), Evans
(labourer) and Jones (labourer).
Re: Evans/Hamer certificate
Dear Mary Paton
I doubt whether the office would have checked Llanllwchaiarn. I think that
the staff would have looked only at the parish/town which you requested.
The returns to the registrar were church by church or chapel by chapel and
not parish by parish, etc. More marriages than would be considered normal
for this period were performed in the register office at Newtown and I
wonder whether this agency were consulted. Please let me know again the
details which you have for Edward EVANS and Mary HAMER and, as you are a
MontGenSoc member, I will see if there is anything that can be done to
resolve this matter locally.
Re: RICHARDS, Berriew, Montgomeryshire
Dear Peter
Edward RICHARDS may have lived at Upper Dunnant in Berriew. I would
suggest that you should contact Powys Archives Office, Llandrindod Wells,
Radnorshire. Ask the staff to check the electoral registers (both county
and parliamentary) for Berriew for the period concerned. In 1891 at
Berriew there were two people named Edward RICHARDS, viz.
Cross Lane
Edward RICHARDS serv S 20 agricultural labourer born Llanymynech
Cross Cefnpol
Edward RICHARDS head M 60 agricultural labourer born Berriew
The latter's wife was Ann aged 65 born Berriew. There were two adopted
children: Harry EVANS 12 born Manafon and David MOSER(?) 10 born Berriew.
