I'm Saesneg, but believe it's pronounced locally as

Llan eye-r

Erwood is pronounced 'air-ud' by the older inhabitants. Incomers
say Erwood as 'Er' being as in 'her' but without the 'h' and 'wood'.

It appears written as 'Erwd' in some early documents and I seem to
remember that Powys Archives Office suggested that this should be
the spelling adopted as the version for Welsh translations.

Some though that 'Y Rhyd' should have been used - being 'the
crossing' - the drovers crossed with their cattle a few hundred yard
up stream towards Builth from the village - the deep 'v' cut into
the bank is still visible near the roadside. This may have been the
origin of the village name.

Boughrood (Bochrwd), another crossing, is lower down the Wye near
Llyswen.

No doubt others can give a much better representation than mine
using 'proper' phonetics!
