Hi Ruth,
My husband has a book called "The Cambrian Railways" by Rex Christiansen & R
W Miller. It is Volume 1: 1852-1888. In the acknowledgements it states that
the official records are kept in the British Transport Historical Records
Office, London. There are also a number of other source documents , etc. if
you want them. I have looked up your people in the index & they do not seem
to be mentioned, but there is a short piece about stationmasters: -
"The Cambrian's chain of management locally was through stationmasters & when
they erred consequences were strong - as the man at Fenn's Bank, J Baddiley,
found out on 15 September 1865 when he was sacked for leaving his station
without putting somebody else in charge.
Stationmaster's pay at the smaller stations was 15 shillings to 16 shillings
a week & their uniform included the traditional silk hat. A well-known
stationmaster in the sixties was John Ceiriog Hughes of Llanidloes, one of
the most famous of Welsh Bards. He moved to become manager of the Van
Railway in 1872.
Stationmasters who did not send in accounts on time were reprimanded under
instructions issued on 14th April 1871. These stated that the penalty for
repeating the offence was dismissal."
Since the book was published in 1967 with a new edition in 1971 it is
possible that the records may have been moved. I will see whether I can find
out. If you are interested in the book the ISBN is 0 7153 5236 9.
Hoe the above is of some help.
Tricia
