Hi Dennis, Margaret and LIST,
This book sounds like, should I say, almost but not quite exactly what I
want. I am definitely interested in the Baptist vs.the Quakers part.
I am reasonably sure my Richard Davis (David) came to America from the
Rhydwilim Baptist Church in 1701. This church is and was in the
southern half of Landissillo Parish which is in Carmarthenshire and
Pembrokeshire. One of the assistant ministers, Thomas Griffiths, was
asked to head up this breakaway group of what was called Calvanistic
Welsh Baptist. He had been their minister for a number of years and
continued as their minister until he died in about 1720's in the
Pencarder church which they built in what is now Delaware. Between
about 1660, the time Rhydwillim was founded, and Richard's departure in
1701 there were a number of ministers there with the Davis surname, none
of which I have been able to link to Richard. Does anyone have
informatrion on any of these Davis ministers?
The straight Welsh Baptist and the Calvanistic Baptist may have later
shared the same meeting house at Rhydwillim or they may have built a new
Calvanistic meeting house later. My poor memory keeps telling me a map
I downloaded showed a Calvanistic Meeting House near Rhydwillim.
>From books I have found I have a fair understanding on this Welsh
Baptist movement over here and over there. But now I find the Welsh in
Welsh Tract in PA that were already over here and greeted Richard on his
arrival were mostly Quakers. and his parents could have been Quakers. I
do not have too much knowledge of the Quakers in Wales from 1660 to
1701. I have the books; "Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania," 1970 by
Thomas Allen Green, "The History of the Welsh Baptist, 63 to 1770," 1835
by J. Davis and the Davis (David) family from Wales to America, 1927 by
Henry Alexander Davis. In a very broad sense they cover the Davis
family and the Baptist but very little on the Quakers.
The book you mention, "Radnorshire - from the Civil War to Restoration"
by Keith Parker, Logaston Press, at £12.95p. Covers Rads and nearby
Counties/people for the period 1640-1660, lots of names, photo's,
and____ appears to cover the chapter before the chapter I need. Most of
these Quakers to PA in 1680 to 1700 were from Merionethshire. The said
Radnorshire and nearby counties might get my Merionethshire and maybe
not. The question, "Would this reasonably priced book be the one for
me or do you have a better suggestion?"
Any and all help appreciated. Best regards, Bob (Robert) Davis Hemphill
