Hi everyone,
I have another of these place name queries. I am reading The History of
Radnorshire, Reverend Jonathan Williams published by Stephen Collard of
Rhayader.
In the entry of Llowes the author talks about Bualtt. I know Builth Wells
was known as Llanfair-ym-Muallt. Taking into consideration the way sounds
alter in Welsh is it possible that this was used as a shortened form of
Llanfair-ym-Muallt and is in fact Builth?
I do wish I was able to speak Welsh considering that it was the first
language of my late father I am surprised I find it so difficult. I only
discovered recently that Welsh had been his first language as I never heard
it speak it at home except for the odd word. He was away fighting in the
Second World War for the first years of my live and not long after he
returned home we moved to England. I expect this was the reason why he
never spoke Welsh especially as my mother and her family were English
speaking.
Regards,
Margaret Harvey
