I have had this happening as well - my GG Gfather moved from being Farmer's
son to Ag Lab to Farmer and I've only really managed to verify the first
two. I think "Farmer" could mean anything from a few hundred acres to a
(very) smallholding. I don't think the ownership thing is relevant as
tenants could hold the same land for generations on some estates and would
effectively "own" the land, or might at least consider they did; this seems
to be the case in a branch of my family.
