Hi Dennis,
Thank you again for your info.
Bill Barker's transcript for Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant seems to be very
incomplete but the problem may be that he's tried to split the parish into
two parts, Denbighshire and Montgomeryshire and I presume he has tried to
isolate the latter to fit in with his CD title "Families (1675 to 1825) of
Montgomeryshire, Wales". You would have to identify each farm on the map
and know exactly where the county boundary was for that -but there must be
more to it than this. I find that his introduction is not clear when he
says:
"Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant (Mechain), South, parish, with village, is in
north Montgomeryshire, Wales 4 miles northwest of Llanfyllin. Size is
10,063 acres and population in 1951 was 741. It is called Llanrhaiadr and
is bordered on the north by Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant, North, parish in
Denbighshire ("The Survey Gazetteer of the British Isles" by John
Bartholomew, Edinburgh, 1964). Llanhaiadr Bishop Transcripts do not appear
to exist separately for the Montgomeryshire parish. Bishop Transcripts for
Llanhaiadr, Denbighshire (on LDS film #104807) cover baptisms, marriages
and burials for 1662 to 1844." This seems to suggest two parishes at
first, then followed by a denial.
I find the boundaries and area names to be most difficult around here.
Thomas(1730-1799) Francis, in his will, described himself as being of Cefn
Coch, Pennant. His son Thomas(1769-_?) Francis, in his marriage bond
described himself as being a farmer of Pennant, MGY.
At first I thought they were referring the parish of Pennant Melangell
MGY, leaving me a choice of two Cefn Cochs at SJ005356 or SJ106263. The
clue came from finding the farm 'Cadnant' at SJ086259, and south-east of
that I saw the capitalised named PENNANT at SJ100248 just above the name
Tanat Valley on my 1963 Ordnance Survey map.
Has anyone any idea what this latter name Pennant represents - a township
perhaps?
Cheers, Tony
