Hello Alison,

I think I have uncovered a 'can of worms' concerning Jane and Thomas!

Don't think there are 2 Thomas Ashton's born 1794. I believe the Thomas
Ashton on Clatter in 1881 was the same one I found on 1861 and 1871
census at Llangunidr:-

1861 census:-
Ty Isaf, Llangynidr, Breconshire

RG9 4216/f113/p44

HOWELLS Richard, h, m, 49, farmer, BRE Llangynidr,
HOWELLS Jennet, w, m, 35, , BRE Cantref,
HOWELLS John, s, u, 23, farmer's son, BRE Llangynidr,
HOWELLS David, s, , 1, , BRE Llangynidr,
HOWELLS Jemima, d, , 9, , BRE Llangynidr,
JAMES Elizabeth, sv, u, 16, domestic servant, BRE Llangynidr,
ASHTON Thomas, sv, m, 67, farm labourer, MGY Trefeglwys,

1871 census:-
RG10-5584/f96/p29

Prince Town, Llangynidr, Breconshire

DAVIES Benjamin, h, m, 39, farm labourer, BRE Llangynidr,
DAVIES Jane, w, m, 47,, BRE Llangynidr,
ASHTON Thomas, ld, w, 76, farm labourer, MGY Llanidloes,

Probably Thomas had enough and wanted to get back to his beloved home in
Trefeglwys?

Remember, the 1851 census at Tredegar, Monmouthshire:-

>> H0107-2448-67-9
>>
>> 20, Queens Square, Tredegar
>>
>> Ashton Thomas h m 57 grocers porter Trefeglwys, MGY
>> Ashton Roger s u 30 coacher ,, ,,
>> Ashton John s u 23 coacher ,, ,,
>> Ashton David s u 21 dragger ,, ,,
>> Ashton Ann d u 26 ,, ,,

Notice that the boys are coachers and dragger (more likely dragsman)
These occupations are tied in with stage coach or carriage used in
public transport. Could the family minus Jane have come to Tredegar?

I thought it doubtful until I found this on 1851 census at Trefeglwys:-

Newtown Enumeration District, Parish of Trefeglwys

Bronhaul,
H0107-2496/f329/p4

ASHTON Jane, h, m, 57, Weaver, flannel, MGY Trefeglwys,
ASHTON Richard, s, u, 17, Weaver, flannel, MGY Trefeglwys,
ASHTON William, s, u, 15, Deaf & Dumb, MGY Trefeglwys,

She is shown as married as well!

Have you found Jane on 1861 census at Montgomery? I thought I had a copy
but must have lent it out!

This is Thomas Ashton and Jane in 1841:-

H0107-1436 ED7

description:- From Penycor to Cwmbwnant in an easterly direction
RD of Llanidloes Lower. Parish of Trefeglwys, Township of Dolgwden and
Bodaioch (part of) Township.

Place was called Grand....?? not very clear. There was a place called
Talgarth Mill nearby.

Thomas Ashton 45 weaver Y
Jane Ashton 45 Y
David Ashton 10 Y
Richard Ashton 7 Y
William Ashton 5 Y

David would be the right age in 1851. Their other children may have been
scattered around as servants in 1841. Will have to scour the area for
Roger, but if he was a 'coacher' at that time he may even have been in
Monmouthshire! Monmouthshire 1841 is not indexed by surname, may be
another few months or so?

Not sure if Margaret Brownrigg's Charles Ashton's father was Thomas
Ashton?

What do you think, so far. The deaths of Thomas and Jane seem to tie in
as well. Where were they buried?

best regards

Barrie Jones, Gwent
