Hi everyone,
Primitive Methodism was founded by Hugh Bourne and William Clowes at Mow Cop
in North Staffordshire and they held camp meetings in the area. Pulpits
were made from piles of rock and many people travelled miles to listen to
the men. The Methodist Church tried to ban the camp meetings but to no
avail. They became known as Primitive Methodists because they were reviving
Wesley's Primitive Ways. There is much more information and photographs on
the following website:
http://www.mowcop.info/htm/primitive.htm
Mow Cop can be seen for miles around and there is an amazing view of the
Cheshire Plain and North Staffordshire from the very top. By the way Mow is
pronounced in the same way as "how".
I was born in Llanidloes although I now live in North Staffordshire. The
Wesley Stone that Dennis referred to is at the north corner of the Old
Market Hall and John Wesley preached from the Market Place in 1748, 1749,
1764 and 1769. From the book "Llanidloes Town and Parish" by E. R. Morris I
was interested to discover that on one occasion he lodged at the nearby
Bear's Head Inn which I find very surprising considering his views on
alcohol. The author adds that he often stayed at Tyddyn, Oakley Park with
staunch adherents, it is on the outskirts of the town and apparently the bed
he slept in can still be seen.
Regards,
Margaret Harvey

Wesleyans so I went looking and found some good sites, including the
following:

> I have found that my ancestors on my dad's side were Methodists of all the
three kinds that have been mentioned. I know that, in the Wesleyan chapel
that I attended, women were not allowed to be Deacons but I don't know about
the other two. On the above site, it says that Primitive Methodist women
were allowed to be lay-preachers.

have married in the Church in Wales, so the only Methodist certificate I
have is the one from Siloam. The minister's name is on there, also the
name of the Registrar - both Jones, what else?? - but it says that they
were married by 'Certificate'. I am curious as to whether or not this is
on the other certificates from this chapel or if this might have been a
special certificate if they brought in a Wesleyan minister?
