Gene Pennington, Research Director for the PRA, will make a guest
appearance on TV this Thursday, 7/12/01. I will be interviewed by Becky
Worley about Genealogy Research on the Internet. The TV show is titled
"Call for Help" and is broadcast daily at 1:00 PM (PST) from San
Francisco by television channel TechTV. TechTV is usually only
available on cable TV systems (channel 294 on AT&T in the San Francisco
Bay Area) or on satellite systems.

John Pennington, ARD responsible for Family Groups and Chair of the DNA
Study Group, reports that all of the DNA samples have been collected and
sent away for analysis by the Family Tree DNA company. John says it will
be about two months before we receive the results.

Dr. Chuck Pennington, President, announced on June 23, 2001 that the
Pennington Research Association is officially incorporated in California
as Pennington Research Association, Inc. We are now drafting a new set
of Bylaws which will be presented to the Board for their review and
approval at our meeting July 26, 2001.

Final plans are being made by Flo Readiger for the PRA 2002
Reunion/Meeting in San Antonio Texas. Flo reports there are 41 people
registered for the meeting and 72 who will attend the Saturday night
banquet. Great job Flo! I know everybody will enjoy themselves.

Alice Sanders, Vice President, reports from Indiana that her meeting at
Earlham College with Rev. Jasper Green Pennington and Dr. Thomas Hamm,
the Archivist of the Friend's Archives there, went very well. The PRA
is working on a Pennington Research Library project and it is hoped that
we can arrange with Earlham College to be the repository of all of our
research books, documents and photographs. Alice will make a full
report to the Board at our meeting on July 26, 2001.

The 2001 cycle for submitting Petitions for Changes to the JFMF and
genealogy reports by new PRA members has reached a milestone. These are
changes and reports submitted since the last cycle (ended in March
2000). All of the submitted material has been made available to the
Research Committee for their review. They have 60 days to review the
information and to submit their recommendations and comments before the
next step in the process begins. The 2001 cycle will end 12/31/01. The
next cycle will start 1/01/02 and we plan to start the input of approved
data/information from the current cycle into JFMF, version 00-1 (current
version). We plan to have the next version of the JFMF (version 01-01)
available for distribution by 3/31/02. We plan to start accepting the
next round of Petitions on 4/01/02. We continually accept genealogy
reports and gedcom files from new PRA members.
The Petitions for Changes to the JFMF submitted this cycle are:
Petition for Change to PRA Family Group 4
Petition for Change to PRA Family Group 7
Petition for Change to PRA Family Group 8
Petition for Change to PRA Family Group 9
Petition for Change to PRA Family Group 16

If you're looking for the "old" message boards on GenConnect where
information was posted on wills, bible records, queries, pension
records, marriage and obituaries, they've moved. The message boards on
GenConnect were changed recently. Apparently the "new" owners of
Ancestry.com (which owns RootsWeb), Genealogy.com and several other
genealogy companies felt the need to consolidate all of the message
boards. A&E now owns all of these genealogy companies (and web sites)
after their recent purchase of Genealogy.com from Mattel and is moving
to streamline all of these various web sites and message boards to cut
their expenses and in the process, provide the researcher with better
value.
They have added several new categories for messages and you can select
which category you want to read and/or post a message to. You can also
asked to be notified when a new message is posted to any one, or all, of
the message boards.
You can read ALL of the posted messages for ALL categories by going to
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=surnames.pennington
and selecting "All" in the category box. You can also find your way to
the message board by going to http://boards.ancestry.com and then enter
"Pennington" in the "Find a Message Board" box. You can also get there
by going to http://rootsweb.com/ then scroll down to "Message Boards"
and then click on "Message Boards Home Page" which will take you to
http://boards.ancestry.com again.
The only down side to the new board is the requirement that you have to
login to post a message and/or to reply to a posted message. However,
Ancestry.com does have a very good privacy policy (sharing your personal
information) and I felt comfortable with providing my information. You
should read their privacy policy before deciding for yourself. By
creating a login for yourself, you are able to search and use more
features within Ancestry. COM. If you are already a member of
Ancestry.com, you can use your current login name, etc.
Well that's the latest news from the PRA. See you in San Antonio!
