Information from Books read by Barbara Evans (ne Prater, b. 1918)

In 1549 a Sir Anthony Kingston was the Provost Marshal who was in charge of
putting down a rebellion of the Cornish against the new Prayer Book. It is
possible that Sir Anthony was the brother of Elene Kingston (1493 - 1547 who
married John Prater of Inglesham). Elene was the daughter of Sir Anthony
Kingston.

Hello Pam, Your info matches some info sent to me by good ol Gary Prather.
I have cut and pasted the information for your reading. I found it to be
very facinating !! Sandie Prater.

John Prater died before June 20, 1947. Elene signed her will on that date;
the will she stated she was to be buried in the Chancel of Inglesham Church
beside her husband. The will was written in Latin. Her will was proved August
30, 1557.

Elene is thought to be the sister of Sir Anthony Kingston of Painswick,
Gloucestershire and Mary Courtenay. Sir Anthony Kingston was Provost -
Marshal in Cornwell, Kinighted by King henry VIII, 18 Oct. 1537. Also served
in House of Commons. died 14 April 1556. Sir William Kingston, the father of
Elene was Knighted in 1513 and was the Keeper of the Tower of London when Ann
Bolyn was beheaded there. The title of Keeper of the Tower of London was one
of the most powerful positions held under King Henery VIII. Sir Wm Kingston
was a Knight of the Garter 24 Apr 1538, he died 14 Sept 1540.

The Manor of West Kingston descended to the Ivye Family from the Kingstons.
The Kingstons, Ivye (Ivrye), De la Mere (Delamare), Scope, Carew, St.John,
Mallot, Bohun, Courtenay, and Prater families were all allied families which
had entermarried into one anothers families for generations.

*The Courtenay family was directly descended fro "Pharamond" the first King of
France (ca. the year 480)
*The Kingston family were Irish Barons (Baron King) and the Earls of
Kingsbourgh.
*The De la Meres were Norman and desended from a powerful Baron named Norman
whose Castle was
on a lake in Normandy, (a. the 940) an believed to be descended from King
Charlemagine.
*The Carew Family was descended from sir Otho Of Windsor a younger son of Otho
the 7th Count of
Vermindos, who himself was descended fro Pepin III Inkg of Italy, the
younger son of King
Charlemagine.
*The Scope family descended from powerful Norman Barons that date back to
Edward the confessor
(ca. the yer 900's). A descendant held the position of chief Justice under
King Edward I.
* The St.John family descended from powerful Norman Barons which came into
England at the time of
the conquest (ca.the year 1066) from their Manorial Estates of St. Jeanes
in Normandy.

The Prater family is believed to have descended from Welch Princes an Norman
marcher Barons who possibly descended from Roman Nobility. (information
recieved from the research of GBPrater, Family Historian)

NOTE: during King Edward Vi (during an uprising in S.W) SIR ANTHONY KINGSTON
(Elene Kinston Prater's brother), being provost Marshall, wrote to a certain
Mayor declaring that he and others would come and dine with him on a certain
day. The Mayor seemed to be very joyous at this, and made ready for them.
Upon their Arrival was made very welcomed by the Mayor. Sir Anthony called
the Mayor aside and told him there was to be an executuon of rebels in the
town and for him to have gallows to be made ready by the end of dinner. The
Mayor did so. After dinner Sir anthony took the Mayor by the hand and asked
him to take him to the gallows, when seeing them Sir Anthony asked the Mayor;
"think you they are strong enough?" "Yes sir," he said. "Thant they are !".
"Well then" said Sir Anthony "get you up to them, for they are provided for
you !". The Mayor cried "I trust you mean no such thing to me ?" Sir Anthony
replied " Sir, you have been a busy rebel, therefore this is appointed as your
reward," So without further delay the Mayor was hanged.

The Lord Privay, Lord John Russell: As our men were retiring I arrived and
as it was growing late I thought it good to lose no time, appointed Sir
William Herbert and Sir Anthony Kingston with their footmen and horsemen, to
set on one side, my Lord Grey to set opposite them, and I with my company to
come on the other side; at this sight the rebels' stomachs so fell from them
that they fled without any blow. The horsemen followed and chase, and slew up
to 700 and took a far greater number. I have immediately sent Sir George and
Sir Peter Carew with a good band to keep the town in check. (research by Gary
B. Prather, Frisco TX.)

There are many such recorded facts about various other members of the family.

This was a time of Royal rule an only those who protected the Crowns interest
could survive and advance. The Prater/Prather family and other allied
families were in such a position, devout Royalist. They gained much of their
power and wealth by being "servants of the King". But finally in 1645, like
the King of England, they lost everything with the overthrow of the Crown by
Cromwell.
