I actually made a speach on this topic in college. We were required to
explain something that was hard to explain. I have only heard of one way
to count cousins. You count how many generations you are from a common
ancestor. If you are equal number of generations you will be some number
cousins. If you are not equal number of generations you will be removed.
Here is an example:
? Lessley (common ancestor)
siblings: Thomas Lesley Joseph Lesley
1st cousins: Robert Alexander Lesley John Joseph Leslie
2nd cousins: John Joseph Lessley Joseph Thomas Leslie
3rd cousins: Andrie Goggins Lessley John Calven Leslie
4th cousins: Thomas Adreie Leslie Samuel Boyd Leslie
5th cousins: Timothy Wayne Leslie Sammie Leslie Rainey
6th cousins: Annabel Rainey Ballew
Looking at this chart. Robert Alexander Lesley and John Joseph Leslie
would be first cousins. John Joseph Lessley and Joseph Thomas Leslie would
be second cousins. Audrie Goggins Lessley and John Calven Leslie would be
third cousins. Thomas Adreie Leslie and Samuel Boyd Leslie would be fourth
cousins. Timothy Wayne Leslie and Sammie Leslie Rainey would be fifth
cousins. Timothy Wayne Leslie and Annabel Rainey Ballew would be 5th
cousins once removed. Robert Alexander Lesley and Annabel Rainey Ballew
would be 1st cousins 5 times removed. John Joseph Lessley and John Calven
Leslie would be 2nd cousins one time removed.
Hope this helps.
Annabel
