A complete list of Puerto Ricans who graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy
at Annapolis,Md Can be found in "Historia Militar de Puerto Rico by Hector
Andres Negroni. Col. USAF (Ret.)
The following graduates are listed as having achieved flag rank . I believe
all with the exception of Vice Admiral Hernadez are dead.
Rear Admiral Luis Federico Jaimieson. born 27 Feb.1880 in Manuabo, PR. Son
of Luis Reifkohl Sandoz and Julia Jaimieson. Graduated from the Academy in
1911. In WW I recieved the Navy Cross as an officer aboard the USS
Philadelphia. In WWII was captain of the USS Vincennes and recieved the
Purple Heart for wounds received in combat..Died in 1969.
Rear Admiral Edmund Ernest Garcia. Born Ponce, PR in 1905 and graduated in
1927.
during WWII he was commander of the Destryer USS Sloat and saw action in the
invasions of Africa, Sicily and France. Died in 1971
Vice Admiral Jose Cabanillas Born in 1901 in Mayaguez, PR and graduated in
1924. Prior to WW II he served aboard cruisers, destroyers and subs. In WW
II he was Executive Officer of the USS Texas and participated in the
invasions of Africa and Normandy (D-Day).
Admiral Horacio Rivero Jr. Born in Ponce in 1910. He entered the Naval
Acadmy in 1927 and graduated in 1931, 3rd in his class. During WW II he
commanded naval batteeries aboard the USS San Juan and saw action through
out the Pacific in the Landins at Guadalcanal, Santa Cruz, Bouganville, Iwo
Jima and Okinawa.
Rear Admiral Rafael Benitez Born in Juncos, PR in1917, He entered the Naval
academy in 1935 and graduated in 1939. In WW II he served aboard submarines.
Vice Admiral Diego Hernandez, Born in San Juan in 1934 and graduated from
the Illinois Intsttute of Technology where he was in tha Naval ROTC progrma
and in 1956 reecived his piolpots wings and served abord tha aaircraft
xarrier Jonn F, Kennedy. He holds amonfg many decoirations trhe Silver star,
the Legion of Merit and Purple Herat. He retired in 1991.
Lt. General; Pedro Agosto Del Valle (USMC) Born in San Juan, PR in 1893 and
graduated from the Naval acadmy in 1915 as a 2nd Lt. Served in Haiti,
Domincan Republic and WWI as a liasion officer to the British Army. After
the war participated in campaign s in nicaragua and in 1937 as the US
obsrvor in the Italian Etheopin War. In WWII he was a colonel in charge of
the 11th Marine Artillery Regiment and led the in Battle of or Guadalc,
Taguli, Russell island and other pacific islands, ZIn 1945 he was promoted
to major General and commanded the First Marine Division which captured
Okinawa. He received the Distinguished Service Medal, second only to the
Medal Of Honor. He retired in 1948.
