Have you looked for INS files or at the National Archives' Passenger
Manifest holdings? These often show the original name. You could also
check church records for his marriage or birth of children in the U.S. For
many reasons, the church records seem to be more accurate.

Grandma shortened and Americanized names. I have pinned down the spelling
of her maiden name. Cannot find grandpa at all.
Grandma used the names 'Frances Walasz' and 'Frances Walacz'. She listed
her father (in Poland) as "Thomas Durak" (Lublin). The name from Poland
properly spelled was Durakiewicz.
She was born 14 March 1894. Grandpa "Lawrence Walasz" was born in 1883 or
84 in Poland, died around 1928 in de Troit. Cannot find any record. Dad's
bith certificate has 'Walascz'.
In 1890 there were two laborers in deTroit named Walaszewski with
telephones.
