Sharron,
You can back into the arrival date by taking the volume number, looking at
the NARA list of volumes for that port:
http://www.nara.gov/publications/microfilm/immigrant/rg85nyk4.html
You will find: 3629 8296--8297 Mar. 31, 1925
Roll 3629, Volumes 8296--8297, Beginning Dates
You want to look at roll 3629, volume 8297. The ship arrived on March 31,
1925.
Be careful. sometimes they're not on the volume listed or the date is wrong
by a day or two. There are many reasons for this - errors, too many ships
in port at the same time to process in one day, etc. I have had to order
abutting rolls of film on several occassions in order to find who I was
looking for.
Sometimes they give you the steamer name, which can be helpful, but not
critical.
You should use the age and arrival date to back into an approximate date of
birth. This should be used to verify that you're looking at the right
people (or at least a close match.). This saves you from ordering too many
films.
Another point I've noticed about soundex index , that I've not seen
discussed, and that is ordering. They take all the surnames that match a
particular soundex code and group them together. However, the key to sucess
is noticing that they are organized by first name. It makes it much easier
to find folks that way.
I was suprised to see many more of my surname also. Turns out that some
individuals came over here, earned money, went back to Europe. Others went
back and forth several times. Remember these are individual arrival
records. There may be multiples for the same person.

Dear Members,
I viewed a Passenger list soundex Yesterday at the library and need a
little
help. Can anyone tell me what the nimbers are after the name.
Example : Budreis Anton 39m 11 46 8297. I get the 39m and I thought the
other
number may be the alien registration number but some say
Budris anton 24m 8876. What are these? are they any help in finding this
person?Thank you for your time.
By the way these microfilms were full of people with the same surname more
than I thought possible. The microfilm I got was Passengers to New York
1902-1940 and then each soundex is ordered seperately. Now I just need to
know what to do with this info??Thanks in advance.
Sharron
