Hello,
I am searching for any leads or information anyone would like to share
regarding a family surnamed McGill. Family lore said they were related to
the McGill Univ. family but I cannot find a shred of support for that
contention or why the surname of des Riviere would be attached to it.
The missing link was named Margaret or Elizabeth GILLIE who was born in
Ottawa but the rest of the family was from Grenville, Quebec. The family
moved back and forth in both provinces before she met the gentleman McGill,
whose given name I do not have. They dropped from sight in the early 1900s
but no one can explain why. Entries in the family bible and some letters
about them refer to the family as the des Riviere's and placed them in the
Chatham, Ontario area late in life, I cannot find anything else of
significance. Many of the family eventually emigrated to Gratiot County and
Saginaw County, Michigan but there is no trail for the McGill-desRiviere
connection. Any advice would be welcomed and greatly appreciated. I will
certainly share any information I have if you find a connection to this
clan.Thank you!
Sincerely,
Kevin O'Brien
