Dear Benjamin and List,
My Townsends, Pearsons, Coxes, Janneys and many more were scattered
among the fleet of ships, including the Welcome Ship when it landed in
1682 in Philadelphia, along with William Penn when the Society of
Friends from the British Isles settled in Pennsylvania. Richard
Townsend, wife and children were among the first Quakers who came from
the Bucklebury, Berkshire area in England. My direct ancestor, John
Townsend (Richard Townsend's brother), and wife Elizabeth Pococke
Townsend, along with John's nephew Joseph and niece, Joan, came to
Philadelphia around 1712; I can't find the ship that they were all
on. I would also like to find Townsends (from the same line of
Townsends) still living in the British Isles, who can trace back to
the Townsends in Bucklebury, Berkshire. I think that the DNA projects
may assist with that search. I respectfully submit that I'm not sure
how much more on topic that can be, as DNA testing can be very
instrumental in solving family and group (such as the Quakers of the
British Isles) mysteries; but point gladly taken.
Peace be to you,
Kim Townsend Spangrude
