Subject: PHILADELPHIA: JEWELL or SHURTY

I am looking for a sea going Captain named JEWELL who was known to have
associated with the Quakers in Philadelphia around 1740-1780, as nearly
as I can tell. My source says that he lived with the group, even though
he "was not of them".

This man represents a great mystery for a great many of FRITTS
descendants. Any clue to his identity would help tremendously.

In brief, he story is that a german emigrant named F. FRITTS was washed
overboard on one of Capt. JEWELL's Atlantic crossings around 1750. In
time, the widow m. Captain FRITTS and her son m. Capt. JEWELL"S daughter.

At the time of the tragedy, a Philadelphia Planter/or Banker named
SHURTY was reported to have taken the son as an indentured to help him
pay his passage. I have found no families by this name, so am wondering
if there were Quaker families in the Philadelphia area by a similar name,
one that could have been misspelled in my source.

Thanks for your help.
