If a Quaker broke discipline, a group of people, a "committee" would be
named to visit with him/her. If the committee decided the individual was
truly sorry and wished to continue in membership, the individual would be
allowed to "make satisfaction" by issuing a public apology at meeting for
business. If the meeting believed the apology was sincere, the
individual would continue in membership.

Since Quakers became members at birth, and had no baptism or confirmation,
for a great many young people, marriage was the first chance to say "I don't
want to be a Quaker," and meetings, by disowning, would reply "OK. You're
not."
