HEDGES is not a name I am familiar with from my Quaker research but I do
find reference to several HEDGES in _Hopewell Friends History,
1734-1934, Frederick Co., VA_ which details the early history of the
Quaker Hopewell Monthly Meeting which had jurisdiction over a large
portion of VA:
Edward DAVIS owned 875 acres on Tullis'Run, in what is now Berkeley Co.,
WV. On April 10, 1738, as shown in the second deed book of Orange Co.,
VA, Davis disposed of this tract of land in three separate parcels:
(1) To Peter HEDGES, for L30, 5sh, 300 acres on the west side of
Sherrendo RIver and Opeckon Creek, on a branch of Hungoluta River called
Tulise's Brach; adjoining James Davis' land, and part of 875 acres
granted to Edward DAVIS on Nov 12, 1735; witnesses, Richard MORGAN,
Solomon HEDGES, and Joshua HEDGES.
(2) To Richard MORGAN, for L30 5sh, 300 acres, described as above, and
adjoining Solomon HEDGES; witnesses Joshua HEDGES, Solomon HEDGES and
Peter HEDGES.
(3) To Solomon HEDGES for L18, 5sh, 275 acres described as above and
adjoining Peter HEDGES and Solomon HEDGES; witnesses Richard Morgan,
Peter HEDGES and Joshua HEDGES.
The name HEDGES does not appear any place else in this book so my guess
is that they were probably not Quakers but were certainly migrating in
the same direction as many of the Quaker families were. Unfortunately,
the early records of Hopewell Monthly Meeting burned so there is no way
to determine if any of the Hedges joined the Hopewell meeting.
I also do not find HEDGES in Hinshaw's _Encyclopedia of American Quaker
Genealogy, Vol. I_ which covers the NC meetings. This would have been
the next logical stopping place for families leaving Hopewell MM before
heading into OH and IN.
Further research in the civil records may indicate where Peter, Solomon
and Joshua came from and perhaps your Joseph will be in the same
vicinity.
