(Have been trying to send the following message for about 3 weeks now - AOL
never wants to send it!! Maybe this time it will go through - maybe......)
Hello All,
The following are all the Quaker names I am researching in my family tree at
this time:
From North Carolina (most were in PA first): Palin, Nixon, Hill, Overman,
Bond, Bowater, Beales, Antrim, Vestal, McCracken, Chamness, Cole, Kirkman,
Starbuck, Coggeshall, Sylvester; ALSO - (stayed in PA longer): Ridgway,
Chamberlain, Hickman, Pancoast, Wright, Scattergood, Andrews, Ong, Andrews,
Price, Dye (possibly Dyer), Rogers, Fouts (Phouts, Pouts, Phoutz, von Pfoutz,
etc.), Burkett, Sinke (or Sinks) and Robbins. ALSO - maybe Hetfield and
Blackledge who were Quakers in Pennsylvania very early on - but then went to
New York and I believe left the Friends fairly early (the Hetfields were in
Fountain County, Indiana by the 1830's.)
Most of these families eventually ended up in Indiana; many had left the
Society of Friends by the early 1800's.
I have the Hinshaw Quaker records for North Carolina, Pennsylvania & New
Jersey, and New York; also the newly reprinted Indiana Quaker records. I
hope to eventually add the records for Virginia and Ohio. In addition, I
have the book History of Chester County, PA by Futhey and Cope. If you have
a specific name you would like me to look up, let me know (but be patient - I
am easily overwhelmed!!) I also have a little information about Quakers in
Winchester, VA.
I am particularly interested in any information about the HICKMAN family who
came from Wiltshire, England to settle with the Quakers of Pennsylvania.
Francis Hickman and Elizabeth Chamberlain Hickman (Chamberlain was name of
Elizabeth's first husband; I don't have her maiden name) began many
generations of Hickmans in the Philadelphia area. I believe one or two of
these early Hickmans married into the Delaware and possibly the Shawnee
Indian tribes. I also believe they were the ancestors of Hickmans who
settled in Winchester, VA. Anyone having additional information on the
Hickman family would be most welcome. Also, any Quaker lines known to have
married among the Indians are what I am especially interested in. For
example, I believe Ridgways married into the Nanticoke tribe, Bonds married
into the Nansemond tribe, Hetfields married into the Seneca or Mohawk tribes,
etc. Admittedly, my information is quite sketchy, which is why I would be
grateful for any additional facts anyone has to offer.
ALSO - DOES ANYONE HAVE ACCESS TO THE PENNSYLVANIA COLONIAL RECORDS OR
ARCHIVES?? I believe these records are available for sale in book form, but
I don't know where I can buy them (there were several volumes, but I am most
interested in volumes 7 and 8 which were part of the earliest Pennsylvania
records and are commonly referred to as the "Colonial Records".) Are any of
these records available on-line? Any information about these resources would
be MOST APPRECIATED!
I urge all of you to check out your closest Family History Center (located in
"Mormon" churches throughout the U.S.) Also, pension records (especially
appeals for pensions from former soldiers or their families) can be very
valuable resources and are available to view via microfilm at branches of the
National Archives.
