Hi Roger--
I have John Cox as born 1699 and with three marriages: JANE PHILLIPS, 9
Oct 1735. Then HANNAH JENKINS, and later MARY HARLAN (no dates given).

My info is from Billy Cox of 640 North High, Eldorado, Kansas 67042-1641.

These COX families are a real mess. I don't happen to descend from John COX,
but I have corresponded with several who do. A Lawrence Cox in Hutchinson,
KS, now deceased, said:

John COX, b. ca 1686, England; m. ca 1713, Mary GARRETSON, d/o John and Ann
(?) GARRETSON. Their children included: John, Sarah WIERMAN, Benjamin,
William, Samuel, Amy WIERMAN, Ann RUDDOCK, Thomas, Hannah WINTER, Ruth COX
(m. Solomon of my line), Joseph, and Solomon. May have been others.

The son, John COX, b. ca 1714; m. 1-8mo-1735, London Grove MH, Chester, PA,
Mary HARLAN, d/o Moses and Margaret RAY? HARLAN. Their children included:
John, Jacob, Margaret SPENCER, Dinah MCGREW, May MICKLE, and Rebecca.

One researcher says this John m2, Sarah OLDHAM. Another says that the John
COX who m. Sarah OLDHAM is the son of John and Mary HARLAN COX.

As Lawrence Cox put it: "At any rate, in 1914, Gilbert Cope wrote to Joseph
Brown Turner: 'John Cox, Jr., who brought a certificate from England in 1710
and is supposed to be son of John andRachel, was disowned 12-26-1741/2 for
drinking to excess. He m. Hannah JENKINS in 1720, but whether they had
children I know not.' This John COX, Jr. is evidently from another family or
another branch of our family. It seems that there is a lot of confusion
regarding the John COXes of this period and their wives. It may be that we
will never be able to get everything straight. Moses Harlan named
grandchildren Jacob and Dinah in his will."

So, good luck with the COX family! If you get a chance, please keep me
posted on the answers you receive from other researchers. Would love to
know if someone has begun the task of sorting this all out!

Roger, welcome to the mix-up. There were about three John Coxes born
during the period 1675-1695. Many people doing research have mixed these
people up drastically. Some of them have been linked with the wrong wives,
children from one family listed as being from an altogether different
family etc. etc.

It is noted by independent researchers and others that there was a third
wife of the JOHN COX who married HANNAH JENKINS. She was SARAH OLDHAM,
dates I do not have. The parent JOHN COX was married not only to CHRISTIAN
MATTHEWS but to ANNE HIND, also. I don't have anything on a Mary Garretson
being married to John Cox but that does not mean she wasn't.

I wish you luck in your search for the answers to many questions regarding
these families and if by chance you do happen to come up with the factual
connections, believe me, you will be a hero.
