Cheska & Marie -
Looks like I really stirred up the hornets on these folks <G>. A couple of
points:
(1) I failed to mention that the Nottingham article in the NGS Journal was
written by A. Day Bradley, who appears to have "some" aura of authority
on Quaker matters, at least in the pages of the NGS Journal. It was he
who called Ann Howell the dau of William Howell, as opposed to his widow,
as would appear from the other references cited.
(2) It is not terribly unusual to have records of Marriage Intentions and/or
Report of Marriage Accomplishment from the Monthly Meeting Minutes but
still be lacking the actual date of Marriage ceremony due to a separate
Marriage book possibly not surviving. My practice, is to accept as the
Marriage date in these cases, the date Reported Married if that is all
that is available. If the date of 2nd Declaration of Intention & the
Liberation to Marry is available, then that is the better date, as usually
the actual ceremony would have been accomplished in most instances within
the week following, if not that same day. Notwithstanding these
observations, one should still seek after the date of the actual ceremony.
(3) To the newbies amongst us, I'd like to point out that one of the joys of
Quaker research is that they kept multiple records relating to one event.
Thus, even if one of the records did NOT survive, the odds are good that
one of the related records DID survive.
