<< I am in quest of more information on my ancestor, Arthur SMITH, a Quaker
who lived in Setauket, LI, NY. This Arthur may have been a resident in
Hartford, CT in 1639. In 1659 he was sent to New Haven, CT for trial for
his Quaker beliefs where he was convicted and suffered a lashing as
punishment. In 1668 he appears in Southold records, and in 1670 he is
recorded as owning property in Newtown. >>

Dear Stu,

I checked the Hinshaw, Volume III, per your request and although I found lots
of Smiths, I did not find any mention of your Arthur or his family.

I checked the index for Annals of Newtown and found no Arthur (although the
book is rife with Smiths...Bull/Smiths...Smithtown Smiths, etc.).

I checked Families of Early Hartford, CT by Barbour and found Arthur Smith who
mar Margaret who mar Stephen Hart and Joseph Nash..."Early member 1 Ch. Name
on Founders Monument"...so I didn't think this one was yours either...but if
I'm wrong and you don't have copies of the pertinent pages, let me know and I
will forward them.

I checked Savage's Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New
England, and found reference to your Arthur, but practically as quoted by you
to me...so I gather you have this already.

I checked Southold Connections, Historical and Biographical Sketches of
Northeastern Long Island and found no reference to your Arthur (but must admit
I've been up since 6:00 this am and this small book probably deserves another
look see when I am rested and my eyes and brain are functioning).

I checked the NEHGR and found references in the index for Arthur Smith in
Volumes 1-20, 71-90 and 111-130. It didn't look like new info for you.

I checked the New York Will Abstracts and found reference to Arthur Smith, but
later than your time frame.

I checked the Genealogies of Long Island Families and couldn't find a family
for Arthur Smith.

I checked the Genealogies of CT Families and found reference to Arthur under
Families of Ancient New Haven, Vol VI (page 1312)...Under Nash Family it
corroborates that Joseph Nash d. 1678 m. 2) Margaret wid/o Arthur Smith who d.
1693/94...she m. 3) Stephen Hart.

So...I'm sorry...I could not add anything new to your data...If you think I
might be able to help in any other way, please do not hesitate to ask.
