I think it could be argued that there is no town anywhere more concerned with
its history and its Quaker heritage than Haddonfield, NJ, and yet quite a few
years ago in that town a supermarket parking lot was paved right over what had
been the Hicksite Quaker Cemetery (yep--just like in the Joni Mitchell song).
The stones were moved to the Orthodox Quaker Cemetery at the time but I
understand the people are still buried under the parking lot. Part of the
supermarket itself is what is left of the old Hicksite Meeting House. I can
understand the need for space that led to this decision but I must admit it
bothers me.
