Subject: 1884 Christmas in Estacado, TX

Greetings!
I knew I'd find this, finally! Clutter is sooo much more challenging...
The following is an brief excerpt from _Estacado: Cradle of Culture and
Civilization on the Staked Plains of Texas_ by John Cooper Jenkins and
Contributors; pub. by
the Crosby Co. Pioneer Museum. (Estacado, TX, was a Quaker colony founded by
Paris Cox, my great grandfather, in 1880.)
"According to George W. Hunt, at Christmas time in 1884 they had a Christmas
tree
at the church the night before Christmas. On Christmas Day they had an all-day
service with dinner served at the church. After noon the men sat around on the
outside of the building in their shirt sleeves and Isaiah Cox, who lived about
3 miles west of Estacado, brought some water melons to the church and served
the people all they could eat. Frost came late that fall, and just before
frost, he stored several melons in his cellar, where they remained in
excellent condition. "We all enjoyed a rare treat," according to George Hunt.
"
(I have excerpted the above without permission.)
Estacado is little more than a cemetery, now, near Crosbyton. By 1900 many of
the Quakers had established the Friendswood community near Houston or headed
for
the Pacific Northwest which they considered "God's Country". (And, they were
right!)
