Hello--
I'm brand new to this list, and I've joined because I've gotten very
confused about Quaker migration. I have tracked some of my ancestors back
from Ohio to Bucks County PA, where some of them descended from some old
Quaker families. But now I'm following some of the lines from PA to OH,
and this is where I'm getting lost.
As I understand it, Quakers from Bucks County established some towns in
Ohio (Seneca County in western OH and Columbiana County in eastern OH are
two, I believe), partly in response to the fact that they did not want to
live in a state that permitted the ownership of slaves. I believe that
some of my ancestors may in fact have lived in Seneca County, and now I
think they may also have lived in Salem, Columbiana County. I have also
come across references to Washington County PA as a sort of jumping-off
place or way-station, or something.
I would so appreciate knowing if there are any books or articles anyone can
recommend that would help me understand this era and the migration routes.
Information like this could help me discover not only where my ancestors
lived, but what was important to them.
Thank you,
Maureen Girard
