Subject: [Q-R] Lydia LEONARD - was she Quaker?
Date: Tue, 13 Feb 2001 15:34:03 +0000
I have started investigating Lydia LEONARD, daughter of John LEONARD and
Abigail MOODY as a possible mother to my Jereter _____ who was wife of
Wiley WALL and listed in the Center MM record as disowned in Feb. of
1840. (161 years ago this month!) Lydia LEONARD was a member of Center
MM, according to various sources. (I have not yet checked Hinshaw's
books). Lydia married Jehu VICKERY, son of Christopher and Hannah
(Hodge/Hodgh) VICKERY. Jehu and Lydia VICKERY apparently lived in Rowan
County, NC in 1810 and maybe also 1820. Presumably Jehu Vickery was
Quaker also.
My question is:
Assuming Rowan Co., NC had Quakers living there, what would be the most
likely preparative meeting location in Rowan County to be under the care
of Center MM? Jehu Vickery was listed in the 1810 Census for Rowan
County.
The name Salathiel VICKERY reminds me of Salathiel LEONARD. Don't know
the connection. Was Salathiel Leonard also a Quaker?
My notes on Jehu Vickery:
<> contributed the following information:
"...migrated from Guilford Co., N.C., through Ohio to Rush Co., Ind..."

Solathial\Solathiel VICKERY
Birth: 16 MAY 1812 in Guilford Co., NC
Death: 1 DEC 1868 in Rush Co., Indiana
Father: Jehu VICKERY
Mother: Lynda LEVENWOOD
Marriage 1 Sarah LONG b: 14 DEC 1817 in Jackson County, Ohio
Married: 24 JUL 1836 in Wayne Co., Ind.
Listed with 11 Children on this web site.
Richard Vickrey () contribued the following data:
Jehu's Wife: Lydia Levinwood Leonard b 1770-1780 [note: I think this
was LEVENWORTH, not LEVINWOOD- TWW]
1810 North Carolina Census, Rowan County:
Jehu [VICKERY] p045 3M1800-1810;2M1794-1800;2F1800-1810; 2F1794-1800;
1F1774-1784
[this fits] sons Christopher (1794); John (1799); Martin (1804); may not
fit Salathiel (1812), possibly one other male. Richard speculates that
one other son may be Joseph who was in Greene Co Ohio with Christopher.
Martin inherited 2 older sons in the 1830s who were born in Indiana
(parent unidentified at this time). Martin apparently had a daughter
named Irena Vickrey (b1825) who married Lewis Clarke about 1846.
Although he has no record of the marriage, Irena and Lewis were next
door to Martin in 1850. They had 2 children: Mary M (b1847); Drusilla
(b1849). The Vickreys and Lewises were apparently Quakers which
probably explains their move from North Carolina to Indiana.
1840 Indiana Rush County shows a Satail Vickery [Salathiel VICKERY] in
which the the male and female aged 60-70 is likely to be Jehu (b.1775)
and Lydia Leonard VICKERY (b.1773), who were both born in this age
range. Jehu had bought land in Washington Township previously. Martin
Vickery is listed nearby.
1850 In 1850 Jehu Vickery is listed on page 513 of the census, also
living with his son Salathiel Vickery:
Salathiel Vickory, 38MFarmerbNC 1812 Rush, p513 Washington twp
Sarah Vickory, 33FbOhio
Martha I. Vickory, 13FbInd
Absolom Vickory, 11MbInd
Rhoda M, 9FbInd
Malinda M, 3FbInd
Jehu Vickery, 75MFarmer bNC
Martin's family is listed nearby also.
Were any of these people Quakers?
