Dear Leslie and QR list,
Ralph M. Buffington, of Texas and Georgia, was the Buffington
expert. I think he is deceased and I don't know what happened to his 30,000
data base of Buffingtons. I quote from a letter I received from him in
August of 1982.
"Thomas Buffington, Jr., of Salem, Mass., was a cousin of Thomas, Jr. of
Pennsylvania. His father married in Salem, Mass. in 1670 to Sarah
Southwick--and both died in Swansea, Mass., about 1728 period. But Thomas
Buffington, Jr. of Salem had difficulties among the Puritans as he was also
inclined to the Quakers, and his death occurred after the year 1705, as long
believed. He had business dealings of record and fathered some children
after that date, but did die young, about 1710. I believe his widow married
the elder Marsh and had two children by that marriage after she was 40 years
of age."
Ralph Buffington had a hand in the book "English Origins of the
American Buffingtons" and the "Buffington Family in America". He was
planning to publish an exhaustive genealogy on the American Buffingtons, but
his health failed and/or he died before that was accomplished.
In 1982 Ralph sent me a chart of the descendants of John and Alice
Buffington, who were earlier mentioned in a post of mine. One of their great
grandchildren was a Thomas Buffington who married a Joan Harberd.
The above Thomas and Joan had children: Thomas, Elizabeth, William,
John and Joan.
He assumes, no documentary proof, that the son Thomas married an Ann and
that they are the parents of the Richard Buffington who married Anne and
emigrated to West Jersey and then to what became Chester County,
Pennsylvania. He shows that the son John of Thomas and Joan (a brother to
the Thomas who married Ann) had children John, William, Joan, Thomas,
Michael, Richard and Sarah. The Thomas in this list he believes to be the
Thomas who settled in Salem, Massachusetts.
He believed that the Richard of Pennsylvania and the Thomas of Salem
were first cousins to each other.
