Hi Everyone,
I am searching for information on Obediah Small (died 1788), his second
wife, and his children.
According to the minutes of Pasquatank MM, Pasquatank Co., NC,
"1757,8,4. Obediah Small of Cartrite Co.. ltm Lydia Bundy"; volume 1, page
165, Hinshaw extracts. Lydia Bundy Small died 12-5-1780 (volume 1, page
117). As per birth records of Pasquatank MM, Pasquatank Co., NC (volume 1,
page 117, HInshaw extracts),Obediah and Lydia Bundy Small had the following
children:
Rachel, born 11-3-1759
Samuel, born 7-20-1761
Benjamin, born 4-5-1762
Obediah, born 4-11-1764
Jesse, born 3-31-1766; died 5-30-1766
Joseph, born 11-26-1767
Miriam, born 1-16-1769; died "11-3-177_"
Gideon, born 11-14-1771
John, born 10-9-1774
Jesse, born 12-25-1776.
"1783,2,19. Obediah Small dis mcd."; volume 1, page 165, Pasquatank MM,
Pasquatank, NC;
"1784,7,21. Obediah con his conduct & was restored."; volume 1, page 165,
Pasquatank MM, Pasquatank, NC.
As per "State of North Carolina, Pasquotank Co., June Term, 1802", Obediah
Small died "....sometime on or about the Fifteenth day of September in the
year one thousand seven hundred and eight eight."
According to the record, Obediah appointed his son, Samuel Small, executor
of his estate. In his will, Obediah bequeathed as follows: "I leave all
the remaining part of my estate to be sold and equally divided after my
just debts and funeral expenses are paid, to six of my youngest children to
them and their disposal. Also according to the record, Samuel Small died
intestate before completing the division of his late father's estate. The
petition to the court was made by John Pike "their guardian and best
Friend", on behalf of 3 of Obediah Small's children, Elizabeth, Joshua and
Nathan Small, who were under 21 years of age at the time of their father's
death.
Question. Does anyone on the list know the name of Obediah Small's second
wife?
Question. Does anyone on the list have additional information on the
children of Obediah Small and his second wife? Three of the children were
obviously, Elizabeth, Joshua and Nathan; were there others? What became of
them?
John Pike brought the petition to the court because according to the
record; "...after the death of the said Samuel, administrator of his
(Obediah) estate, Miriam, the widow and relict; of the said Samuel who in
conveyence thereof took into her possession, the residue of the estate of
the said Obadiah and administered by the said Samuel." Elizabeth, Joshua
and Nathan were asking that the court require "Miriam" to "pay over to your
petitioners, their respective share of the resideue of the estate of their
said father and to grant to your petitioners such further relief....."
Samuel Small first wed Sarah Symons: "1782,7,17. Samuel Small rmt Sarah
Symons."; volume 1, page 165, Pasquatank MM, Pasquatank, NC. In 1786,
Samuel remarried and was disowned for mcd; "1788,8,16. Samuel Small con
his misconduct & was restored."; volume 1, page 165, Pasquatank MM,
Pasquatank, NC.
Question: Who was "Miriam"? Was she the second wife of Obediah Small or
the second wife of Samuel Small? What was her maiden name?? The record
doesn't make it clear if Miriam is wife of Obediah and relict of Samuel; or
wife and 'relict' of Samuel.
Anyone on the list researching Obediah Small and his family?
