To Kate Billett and Quaker Roots List.

Several weeks ago Kate Billett wrote to me and asked whether compilations
have been made of burials in the Richland, Iowa cemeteries. Kate has also
written to the larger list asking the same question.

I have neglected to make any answer, because I have not been able to get
to the Des Moines libraries to check on this matter. Besides a Later Day
Saints search center, there are two main libraries in which to do
genealogical research in Des Moines, the Iowa Genealogical Society Library at
6000 Douglas Avenue in northwest Des Moines and the Historical Society of
Iowa Library at East Sixth and Locust near the State Capitol. I still
haven't made it to Des Moines, but I will tell what I know.

The town of Richland is located in Richland Township in far southeastern
Keokuk County, Iowa. In the past it has been a substantial Quaker
settlement, and I understand there are perhaps two Friends Churches now
functioning in the vicinity.
There are several cemeteries in the township. Probably Richland Cemetery is
the largest, where most of the Quaker burials have been made, but in doing
Quaker research, one should scan burial lists in all of the cemeteries. I
recall that I stopped by the Richland Cemetery briefly about ten or twelve
years ago.

About four years ago I was endeavoring to assist Marjorie Morgan, now
living in California, in compiling her work, "Hugh Laughlin and Mary Harlan".
This involved doing extensive research regarding Jones, Bond, and Singleton
families, all who lived in Richland Township in the later nineteenth
century. My notes indicate that I located "Burial records of Richland
Township, Keokuk, County, Iowa". I probably found these records at the
Historical Library of Iowa near the State Capitol, and they probably were not
very complete, particularly for some of the cemeteries. Probably they are
not in print.

Today I phoned the Iowa Genealogical Library, 6000 Douglas Avenue, P. O.
Box 7735, Des Moines, Iowa 50322-7735. It appears that this library does not
have the cemetery listings which I have mentioned as available in the other
library. However, they do have for sale a WPA compilation of Keokuk County
Cemetery burials. The compilation of the letters A - K is for sale at $16.40
per copy and of the letters L -Z is for sale for $15.00 per copy. Also there
is a listing of Keokuk County Deaths, 1880-1907 for sale for $6.90 per copy.

This is the best I can do to answer this query at this time.
