Violet & List -
The Hinshaw notebooks of extracted records of the Iowa Meetings,
including Salem MM, have been published by Selby Publishing.
These books have also been filmed by the Mormons and are
available on microfiche.
I have examined these records fairly thoroughly on the Mendenhalls
at Salem MM and there is no evidence whatsoever of an earlier
wife for Enos Thomas Mendenhall in them. His father Enos
Mendenhall was disowned by Salem MM in 1839 for using profane
language & dram drinking. Cedar Creek MM was set off from
Salem MM in 1856 and its records show that the older Enos
died in 1860 & was buried at Cedar Creek. One can surmise
that after the disownment the family may have been associated
with the Cedar Creek mtg for worship, however there are only a
few Mendenhall entries there.
Enos Mendenhall & wife Lydia Griffin were granted certs in 1836
by Springfield MM,NC to Westfield MM, Hamilton co,IN. The certs
were endorsed there to White Lick MM, Morgan co,IN. They were
apparently resident there 1836-1838. Thereafter they received
certs in 1838 to Vermilion MM,IL and apparently settled in Henry co,IA
and were Charter Members in 1838 when Salem MM,IA was set
off from Vermilion MM,IL. They were received on transfer from
Vermilion MM on 23 Feb 1839. On 30 Nov 1839 Enos was disowned.
There are gene.recs. at Salem MM documenting DOBs & parentage
of Enos & Lydia & children but because of the narrow window,
nothing much else.

Enos T. MMENDENHALL, b. 1822, Springfield, NC, s/o Enos & Lydia (Griffin)
Mendenhall, married Ist, _________ (Unknown); and married 2ndly, Rachel Emily
Mills, d/o Isaac & Racheal (Beals) Mills, 1848 in Oregon City, Oregon.
According to a MFA (Mendenhall Family Assoc.), Enos T. Mendenhall was on the
Llewell Wagon Train of 1847 going to Oregon; and his first wife, name unknown,
died on the journey. According an Oregon Trail website, Enos was of a Salem, IA
family.
Where do I find Quaker Records for Salem, Iowa?
