Can anyone tell me if burial records were regularly maintained for
Quaker cemeteries in Indiana? If so, how would one go about accessing
this information?
I am specifically trying to find information on my Jones ancestors, who
were supposedly buried at Maple Grove Friends Cemetery, near
Andrews/Huntington in Huntington Co., at least according to information
passed down through the family.
We have been to this small, rural cemetery, and have found it to be in
quite good condition with some fairly recent graves. However, we were
unable to locate markers for any of our family members. How long did the
tradition of not marking gravesites continue? My great-great
grandfather, Eli Jones, is supposed to be buried here and died in
1891...is it possible that graves were still going unmarked that late?
Several years ago, we corresponded with a woman, I believe from Purdue
Univ., who was supposedly writing a book about Maple Grove, but never
heard anything further from her.
Besides Eli Jones (1814-1891), I am also searching for burial records
for his first wife, Amanda (Smith or Armitage??), and Eli's parents,
Micajah Jones (1783-1862) and Sarah Johnson (1785-1862--according to
Heiss, under Maple Grove MM, p.543).
I would appreciate any research leads relating to Indiana Quaker
cemetery records.
Thanks in advance,
Susan Carlson
