Diana, Just thought that I would throw in the fact that my Nehemiah
McKinsey and his wife Catherine Elliott McKinsey and her parents,
Abraham and Rachel Elliott moved to Vigo County, Indiana in 1816 because
of Bounty land that Nehemiah was awarded for his service in the War of
1812. I do not believe that any of them were Quakers by 1816. But I
feel that all of them may have had Quaker grandparents or
gr-grandparents....Nehemiah had been born in SC and his mother was
buried in the Quaker cemetery at the Bush River MM. The Elliotts were
from NC--I am trying hard to connect them to Randolph County, NC or
Perquimans County.
But nonetheless, Bounty land is something you might give some thought
to. I have never read just exactly what percentage of the settlers in
that area had received such land.
I do believe that Indiana was quite the hot property in the time frame
from 1810 to 1820. You have to think that if they were moving from Ohio
to Indiana like crazy in that time frame (which they were) that they
were doing the same from another neighboring state--KY! I do not know
of any Quaker MM in the state of Ky....were there any? I think that the
major stronghold of the Quakers in that time period was in western Ohio.
BUt I would be very happy to be corrected on this thought. marsha in WV
