I love music. And I love music in church. But I can kind of understand how it could be distracting too. If I know a worship song, and I can sing it from my heart and not just my mind, I feel it brings me closer into the Worship of God. On the other hand, when I don't know a song and am just reading the words, fumbling around for the melody, I get nothing out of it and I think is can move me away from the heart of worship. So I can understand how the early Quaker church would take that out of their services. I can also understand why they might ban it altogether. Many more songs are secular and have been over the ages than those written to and about God. And if you start listening to those secular words it can pull you away from God. I have a feeling that might have been a part of the thinking as well. Can you imagine what the early founders of the Quaker church would have thought of movies!!!
