Further sleuthing has solved my problem. I located the child, Neva, in CA Death Certificates on RootsWeb and her parents surnames are listed as Burdg and Peele. Puzzling further over this, I realize that the original Driftwood-Sand Creek MM minutes must have been misread - Purdy instead of Burdg, which I should have guessed at the outset. Alice Asenath "Ann" Burdg was d/o William and Martha Cope Burdg.
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone researching these families.
