Subject: David Smith of Bucks Co PA and Union Co SC: transcription of Bush River MM Meeting notes
Date: Fri, 23 Sep 2005 13:15:49 -0400

It has been said that David Smith of Bush River MM, Newberry SC, was
dismissed from the Meeting because of activities in the Revolutionary War.
I was recently able to read the transcription of the actual tapes which
stated:

28th day of the 10th mo. 1783..The friends that was appointed to inspect
into the cause of David Smith's complaint report that they found nothing of
weight in the complaint and likewise that it appeared to them that the said
David Smith's conduct and conversation has been disagreeable to and
inconsistent with the principles of Friends with regard to the commotions.
He indicating and justifying himself therein and refuses to make an
satisfaction. Under this consideration of which this meeting appoints Thos.
Pearson and David Jenkins to prepare a paper of testification against him
and bring it to our next Mo. Meeting for approbation.

I did not read the paper of Testification of Thos Pearson and David Jenkins,
but I did read of his reinstatement:

29th of the 5th {Hinshaw has 4th] Mo of 1784. David Smith produced an
offering to this meeting condemning his misconduct conderining [?] his
misconduct in giving way to his own will and wisdom as a creature in respect
to the trying dispensations he had to pass through at that time which this
meeting thinks best to receive as satisfaction and receives him again as a
member of our Society.

My question is: is the language used in both the dismissal and the
reinstatement that which would ordinarily be used for a Member who was
involved in Revolutionary activities?
