I'm going to give the brand new list a try !

Joseph FIOLA / FIOLLEN / / PHIALA / VIGNOLA married Madeleine Proulx
Sept. 29 1783 in Rimouski. His marriage record states his parents as :
Joseph PHIALA & Geneviève DESPRES, no county of origin given. A mutual
donation before J. Collin notary (Dec. 09 1783) mentions Joseph FIOLEN
is a native of Hungary.

In his Dictionnaire Genealogique des Familles Canadiennes, Tanguay says
Joseph was born in Quebec c. 1757 and his mother was french-canadian.
Although no document can substanciate this, genealogists are repeating
this speculation. Many baptism records of Joseph FIOLA & Madeleine
Proulx children mention the father is "Allemand de nation " " a native
of Germany ".

Since there is no FIOLA listed in Hesse-Hanau, Brunswick or
Anhalt-Zerbts rolls, I suspect Joseph FIOLA is a deserter of the
Hesse-Kassel regiment. He was buried in Rimouski Feb. 26 1805 (aged 71 !
).

Are there any Hesse-Kassel deserters list available online ?
