I am new to this list and looking forward to learning how to develop more definitive information on my French Canadian ancestors. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

My great great grandfather was Jean Baptiste Clement, reportedly born Jan 8, 1815 in Quebec. He and his family moved to the Chicago area around 1848 and lived there until 1858 when the family moved to Jackson County, Illinois, where they remained for the rest of their lives. His wife was Enastes, born October 31, 1812 in Quebec. They had one son, also named Jean Baptiste Clement, born Feb 14, 1839 in Quebec. A daughter known later as Cecilia was apparently born in Chicago in 1855, although this has not been confirmed. She may also have been known at other times as Clarissa.

Jean Baptiste (b. 1815) reportedly had a brother who moved to Chicago as well. They worked on construction of a Catholic Church there. The brother, name unknown, did not accompany the family into southern Illinois and nothing further is known about him.

>From information developed by a "cousin" in Montreal from the Drouin books, Enastes may have been Anastasie Brisebois, born 1812, who married Jean Baptiste Clement dit Lariviere in Sep 29, 1834 at St. Genevieve. Additional information has been developed on the ancestors going back from there. However, how do I confirm that these are indeed the same people? The dates seem to match up. Are birth certificates available for that time frame? From where? Are there any other sources of information that could corroborate the Drouin information? How can I learn the name of the brother? Was there a census in Quebec in or around 1840? If so, how would I get information from it?

I have asked the AFGS for assistance, but so far have not received a reply to my query submitted in March. The PRDH information only goes up to 1799. The IGI information is inconclusive and sometimes conflicting. So I’m at a dead end for now.

Thanks for any help anyone may be able to provide. And if anyone else is researching this family, please let me know. I have lots of information on the descendants.
