There are two adverbial phases used here "plus tôt" and "plutôt". The first,
"plus tôt" means "earlier", not "later". The second "plutôt", means
"rather", or "instead", not "many".

«There is no doubt that the marriage took place EARLIER. In fact, the act
itself is not dated, but INSTEAD makes reference to the precding act "the
same date as above".»
