On this day in 1826 James Hutton, the father of modern geology, was born in
Edinburgh. Hutton was one of the first scientists to challenge the biblical
conception of time and replace it with one based on the scientific calculation
of the age of rocks. He came to this theory while studying rocks from
Arthur's Seat, an exctinct volcano located at the heart of the city of Edinburgh.
