1645, during the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell's "New Model
Army," routed the forces of King Charles I at the battle of
Naseby. Cromwell, supported by Parliament, captured the king the
next year ending the first phase of the war. Some in Parliament
were willing to negotiate with Charles. However, the king fled
and sought help from the Scots and the second phase of the war
began. King Charles was captured again, convicted as a traitor
and a public enemy, and was beheaded on January 30, 1649. The
army created a new government and Oliver Cromwell became Lord
Protector of England.
