Au Naturel

I came into this world, au naturel
An innocent babe, In mere’s arms, all’s well.
The child grew, sunny, loving of life,
No knowledge yet of the coming strife

‘Twas, at age six, my first trip to church
When that old man high on his perch,
Told me I was a child of evil
Full of sin, spawn of the devil.

Seven of them mortal, he named them all,
Guilty, guilty was cast o’er me like a pall.
Prepare I was told, for as soon as you’re seven
To that black box, back there, you go to be shriven.

So examine you’re baby mind and confess.
Later I lie in my trundle bed, which gave me no rest.
Which of the seven deadliest had I committed?
So I decided upon those to be remitted.

That dog made me Angry when he chewed my shoe,
Sneaking two cookies was Gluttony so true,
All those baby naps must truly be Sloth
Lust seeing Tarzan at the movies, so fine in loincloth.
I was so Proud when I got my new bike,
Didn’t know ‘twas a sin to receive something I like.
I must have been Greedy to want it so much,
And people with them before me I Envied as such.

And so I confessed, properly shriven,
Again and again for now I was mere driven,
To avoid going to hell, whatever the cost,
The harder I tried the more I became lost.

Now I am old and I no longer worry
About the occasional “typo” for which I am heartily sorry,
And If my greatest sin is “au naturel” and “Fitz”
I doubt if I’ll end up in Beelzebub’s Ritz.
