Hmm...I wonder if this is the same family as the car parts people - Lappan. They pronounce it as in, "Lappin' up the old sauce", with the accent on the first sylable.

Actually, your story reminds me that I always thought
Lapan would be pronounced La-Pahn, since it came from
Lapalme and is sometimes spelled Lapanne.
The few I have met in Masschusetts pronounce it La Pan [rhymes with
Man]
Is this how everyone else pronounces it?
