Canadian explorer Simon Fraser reached the Pacific coast today in 1808 - the
successful conclusion to his expedition to explore west of the Rockies and
find a practical trading route across the country. Fraser, the son of emigrant
Highlanders from Culbokie near Inverness, made many expeditions in Canada,
charting what is today the province of British Columbia.
