Hi Grant & list -

I was asked about transferring date out of the
Beta 2008. This message is kind of long and
boring to those not interested in the subject, so I am
stating this here so you can delete now. :-)

Here's how it went.

First of all, I am using FTM V.10. I exported my data
from there as a gedcom file - NOT an FTM file.

However, when exporting from V. 10 it does give you
a choice of which version of FTM to use when exporting.
It will save a file as FTM v. 4, v. 5, v. 6, v. 7, or just FTM
for windows [which I assume is v. 10. the other option
is to export as a gedcom which I did.

So for all the later messages stating FTM does not have
backward compatibility, it certainly seems to be there in v. 10.
Maybe this was dropped with the later versions?

I imported the gedcom into the beta version, but I see now it is missing
26 people. Original file had 8434, Beta file ended up with 8408. I think
these could be the people in my data who were entered as not related.

After import, there was only one reported date error in a marriage.
I have that date as Abt. 1930. I have lots of other dates using abt. [year]
that the program accepted just fine, so I have no idea what the problem is.]

In exporting the file from the Beta 2008, there are only 2 choices for
file type - Family Tree Maker, and Gedcom 5.5. I exported one of each.
Export to FTM took about 1 minute. Export to Gedcom 5.5 took about
8 minutes.

When importing the Beta 2008 FTM file into FTM Version 10
I had to select choose FTM [all types] in order to recognize the
imported file. The import generated 680 warnings & errors.

When importing the Beta 2008 Gedcom file into FTM Version 10
I had the same 680 warnings & errors.

Most of the warnings & errors were in the tag; QUAY,
which is for the quality of the source. this is included in
v 2008, but not v 10.

There were 65 entries with dates listed as
Between [year] & [year] that could not be imported - Not
good.....

There was one note section not imported as it was too long.
Not good....

There were a couple of other items that didn't go either -
Tag: _Foot - I think this might be a footnote only that is a carryover
source from a very old version of FTM. Also not good since
this is the only place the source is recorded.

and Tag:_DCause unknown not imported. I assume this is
cause of death, but I can't find anything out about this tag.

This is all I can figure out.

Lisa
