Hi Sue,
For sure the Catholic church usually favored names from the list of
"Saints", but families were left to themselves to chose any among the list.
Names often perpetuated the name of parents- grand-parents or very close
relationship.
You will find a lot of Toussaint ( or Jean-Baptiste),in first born babies
from generation to the the next.
When the PRDH is back on line, just get to the "free part" and search for "
names"
there are statistics of the most frequent first names at the period
pre-1799.
As well as interesting statistics of the most prevalent surnames,
