Subject: [QUEBEC] Christopher Fischer/Anna Canker?, Germans
Date: Mon, 8 Apr 2002 18:59:07 -0400
Hi John;
I've been assembling some names of Brunswickers/Hessians from church records
from an area north of Montreal, including Oka. I've found quite a few names
that I can connect to your book and that of Virginia DeMarce. They'll be
communicated later. But here's one that has me stumped:
In Oka, on Jan. 6, 1798 was baptized Jean Richard Fischer, born two years
earlier, son of Christophe Fischer and Anna Frederic Canker, Germans. The
writing is very poor, and the microfilm (Drouin #51) not that good but I'm
quite sure of the spelling. The sponsors were not German.
In another previous baptism in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue in 1794, the mother's
name is simply given as Anna Canker (PRDH).
Christopher might be the same as Christian Fischer of the Hanau Jaegercorps
who, we know, was in Canada in 1800. But it seems that both father and
mother were German. Canker doesn't seem to be a German family name (unless
it was given in derision!) but one must take into account that the French
priest perhaps "massacred" the German name. But still I have no idea what
it might be.
Perhaps you might be able to sort this out.
Frank
P.S. I've done Oka only up to 1798, so I don't know if there were any
subsequent baptisms.
