Hello Ed; I'll relate my experience searching Massachusetts (Mass.)
records for French Canadien ancestors. They were Jean bte ROBILLARD &
Mathilde PICHE, arrived in Mass. circa 1850 in Spencer, Worcester area.
When they reported the birth of their children to civil authorities,
they used the name ROBINSON. Probably given them by the town clerk who
would have had no clue as to how to write ROBILLARD. The clue to finding
their children was the combination of anglisized names and BIRTHPLACE of
the parents. Have found that they were rather mobile, as they travelled
back and forth from Spencer to Palmer Mass. to Danielson Conn. to
Woonsocket Rhode Island, always following the Mills along the all
important rivers and always using the ROBINSON name in civil records. My
Great grandfather claimed birth in Spencer Mass in 1853, but finally
found him recorded in a neighboring village. Good Hunting..... Normand
