You know how these news stories are always telling us how the present US
President is related to the first ones and how they are related to
royalty... Well... Everyone is! They are no closer than the average person.
The chart below gives you an idea how we are all cousins
Sub
Total
Start with YOU
1st Your parents 2 2
2nd Your grandparents 4 6
3rd gr-grandparents 8 14
4th gr-gr-grandparents 16 30
5th gr-gr-gr-grandparents 32 62
6th fourth gr-grandparents 64 126
7th fifth gr-grandparents 128 254
8th sixth gr-grandparents 256 510
9th seventh gr-grandparents 512 1022
10th eighth gr-grandparents 1024 2048
11th nineth gr-grandparents 2048 4094
12th tenth gr-grandparents 4096 8190
So everyone has 8190 ancestors in 12 generations.
And all the siblings of these 8190 are aunts and uncles.
And all the children of these aunts & uncles are cousins.
Imagine if you calculated back to the 20th generation
You would have:
1,048,576 eighteenth gr-grandparents
for a total of 2,097,150 direct ancestors
